I am hoping for FIA to take life again and continue where it left off. It you want to teach us the French Language you must continue, otherwise it is just going to become trivia material. You are not done here Professor. I have watched the whole series several times and still only understand 60 to 70 percent. There is no equivalent of FIA in the USA and I for one want to see it continue. It would be so really exciting to see new episodes, even if you use new actors, we can handle that, so there is a challenge for you. Are you up to it?

When I first discovered the course “French in Action” in 1987 I had already taken 4 years of French in school. I was amazed that there was a course that was so different from textbook French. I thought “This is how French should be taught. This is the real French”. I just recently bought the course and never tire of watching the episodes again and again. When I watched the last episode recently I actually cried watching the silhouettes of Mireille and Robert against the sunset “going on to new adventures”. Everything about the course was beautifully, exactly and artistically done. Hopefully I will eventually be fluent in French due in part to the inspiration of “French in Action”.

Merci, Pierre Capretz, for giving the world a course like “French in Action”.

C’est genial de lire des reponses de Prof. Capretz! Le professeur a eu une tres grande influence sur ma vie. C’est largement a cause de FIA que je me suis interesse a la langue francaise, et c’etait une motivation pour moi de faire mes etudes en france dans les annees 90.

I am honored to have a response from M. Capretz. However, I wonder what happens when, even after many listenings, the “magic” does not occur. Many of the responders to this blog, like myself, use the French in Action videos for self-learning. With no instructor, no script for the vignettes and movie/TV exerpts, and no magic, how is one to proceed?
The most progress I made (after watching French in Action) was from using the Champs Elysees recordings, which are accompanied by a script that includes every word (and hesitation), altho those are surely less naturalistic than FIA.
Also, I once found a Folkways record(LP) that had M. Capretz and other professors reading French short stories. (From 1961, including Maupassaunt and Merimee, and apparently still available under Smithsonian Folkways). It is a long way from those stories to Mireille and Robert. Did M. Capretz change
his teaching philosophy along the way?
